FAQ's
Dealing with HMRC isn't always easy but we have prepared some FAQ's that should cover any questions you may have regarding your MOD Tax Refund.
1Am I entitled to a tax refund?
You could be entitled to a tax refund from HMRC if:
> You are currently serving or have served in the MOD in the last 4 tax years.
> Used your own vehicle or public transport to travel.
> Were based at any camp under a 2-year period.

2What can I claim for?
The majority of your claim will be made up of travel costs to temporary postings, but we can also claim for food costs, uniform, training and courses! HMRC issued DIN '2015DIN01-005' to all MOD which states that personnel can claim tax refunds against travel expenses on postings of under 24 months, even if based abroad.
3Why am I registered for Self-Assessment?
Self-Assessment is not just for the Self-Employed. There can be many reasons you need a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number and to complete a tax return.
To claim expenses of this value, we register you for Self-Assessment to enable us to process you tax return via HMRC. Once registered, you will receive a letter from HMRC asking you to complete a return but don't worry, this is just for your records - we complete all the paperwork for you.
4Will my tax code change?
Temporarily yes. After a claim, HMRC automatically change your tax code to include your expenses as they assume they will be the same in the current tax year. This is not the case. If we left it like this, it would mean one of two things:
1 - you would not receive any refund next April, as you would already be getting the tax relief in month.
2 - you could end up owing HMRC money if your expenses were less than last year or if your circumstances changed.
To avoid this happening, we contact HMRC and change your tax code back for you.

5What are your fees?
For an MOD tax return we have a standard fee per tax year. This includes your registration, claim submission, tax code change and any post claim assistance you may require. Should any additional work be required e.g. penalties on your account or returns already submitted - we charge additional fees. Our set fee ensures more of your refund goes to directly to you.
